Blogging is great for someone like me who's left academia and yet is still trying to do a bit of mathematics on the side in my spare time. Learning any subject on your own is hard and sometimes it's tricky to stay motivated. Forcing yourself to structure your thoughts in a form that someone else can read (even if nobody else is actually reading it) really helps a lot. And knowing that you'll have a nice finished document at the end is quite motivating. It also helps as a sanity check - if you make a glaringly wrong statement, someone is likely to correct you quickly. I've also found my old posts to be useful notes for myself!
